Measuring the health of Africa's social impact ecosystems. USII adapts Erik Stam's ten-element ecosystem framework — extending the Motse Collective's South African adaptation — into a country-level index across ten pillars, each weighted by an Umunthu Alignment Factor built on four principles: Dignity, Relationships, Collective Wellbeing and Community Agency. To our knowledge, it is the first ecosystem health index globally to measure narrative power as structural infrastructure.
Peer learning as relational practice. Structured, facilitated circles in which practitioners, funders and community leaders learn from one another as peers rather than audiences. Circles power our communities of practice and curated dialogues.
Issue-focused laboratories. Time-bound labs that convene the actors working on a shared challenge — climate, literacy, youth livelihoods — combining diagnostics, peer learning and co-design to strengthen both the responses and the institutions behind them.
Conversations with practitioners and ecosystem players. Funders, community leaders, storytellers, policymakers — carrying Umunthu thinking into public dialogue and documenting how Afrikan-led change actually happens.
Our annual flagship convening. The inaugural 2025 Forum, under the theme Beyond Aid: Reimagining the Future of Malawi's Development, established the platform. The 2026 edition brought together 200+ senior leaders from corporate, civil society, philanthropy, government, academia and impact investing — and launched the consultative phase of the Umunthu Social Impact Index.
The arm that produces and actions knowledge. Umunthu Insights turns evidence into influence — thought leadership, narrative and policy work, position papers, ecosystem reports and publications. It does not stop at producing knowledge; it puts that knowledge to work to shift the narratives, policies and norms that govern how Afrikan-led change happens.
